Chicago, IL. (Dec. 19, 2017) – Expanding Your Horizons (EYH) Chicago, a non-profit organization focused on providing science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) opportunities for middle school girls, has announced Dr. Rabiah Mayas as the latest member of board of directors.
Dr. Mayas has extensive experience shepherding young minds with STEM outreach and education. She received her doctorate in biochemistry and molecular biology from the University of Chicago. After completing her PhD, Rabiah joined the Museum of Science and Industry (MSI) as the Science Director for Science Chicago, a year long project that recruited over 100 partners and encouraged STEM education through hundreds of public programs. After the completion of Science Chicago, Rabiah continued her pursuit/passion of science outreach and education as the Director of Science and Integrated Strategies at MSI, leading several initiatives within the Museum’s Center for the Advancement of Education.
Now as the current Associate Director of Science in Society at Northwestern University, a research center focused on science education and public engagement, Rabiah continues to promote and provide STEM education and opportunities similar to those that provided inspiration and support in her own science journey: “My own journey into the sciences was facilitated in large part by a supportive family network, STEM role models, and exposure to high-quality science experiences as an adolescent. I’m thrilled to be joining the board of EYH Chicago to help ensure that today’s young women have those critical foundations as they explore the myriad STEM learning and career pathways available to them.”
Expanding Your Horizons (EYH) is a national network that hosts one-day conferences to encourage young women to pursue science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers. Through locally-organized EYH Network programs, the EYH program provides STEM role models and hands-on activities for middle and high school girls. The ultimate goal is to motivate girls to become innovative and creative thinkers ready to meet 21st century challenges! To learn more, please visit EYHChicago.com
